Transparency in coverage: Machine readable files (MRFs)

The Transparency in Coverage Final Rule requires certain group health plans to disclose on a public website specified information regarding in-network provider rates and out-of-network allowed amounts and billed charges. Those disclosures address certain items and services and are provided in two separate machine-readable files (MRFs). The MRFs are updated periodically. The MRFs are publicly available and accessible to any person free of charge. You do not have to establish a user account, password, or other credentials, or submit personally identifiable information, to access the MRFs.  MRFs are displayed in computer code; a digital representation of data or information in a file that can be imported into or read by a computer system for further analysis.
