Health System Specialty Pharmacies Decrease Total Cost
of Care in Cancer Treatment, a Multisite Review

For years, we've never fully understood the value of clinically integrated care

While countless studies have measured the impact health system specialty pharmacies (HSSPs) have on prescription costs and adherence, we've never fully understood the value of clinically integrated care beyond these basic metrics. We believe there's more to the story than what's been uncovered thus far.

What's the real impact health systems have on total cost of care?

We wanted to know. To make progress toward more affordable and effective care, we needed a deeper, more encompassing review of the total financial impact of clinically integrated care– from all cost drivers including medical and prescription.

We conducted a unique study that sought to evaluate the broader impact of clinical integration on cost of care

With nearly 40,000 cancer patients at 25 health systems from across the country, we performed a five-year retrospective cohort study to measure the effects of health system specialty pharmacies on the total cost of cancer care. What we discovered was substantial.
IDNs and their HSSPs generated:
Up to
38%
savings on oral oncolytic prescriptions during the full DoT
Up to
32%
savings on medical care in a 6-month follow up
Up to
14%
savings on oral oncolytic prescriptions in a 6-month follow up

"This study provides us with some of the deepest insights around clinically integrated care to date, and spotlights the importance of building encompassing networks that leverage these sites of care."

Health system specialty pharmacies have the potential to deliver significant value

These results only scratch the surface of what we uncovered during the duration of this study. Download our full report to see how IDNs and their associated health system specialty pharmacies generated significant cost savings to PBMs and payers in several outcome measures related to medical charges, pharmacy costs, and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU).
