PharMEDium and Kit Check Work Together to Help Increase Safety and Efficiency across the Health System

Baltimore, M.D. – PharMEDium®, a part of AmerisourceBergen, and Kit Check® today announced an agreement to embed Kit Check Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) tags on PharMEDium prefilled syringes, a solution that can help enhance patient safety, increase medication efficiencies and reduce waste in hospitals. This collaboration brings together PharMEDium’s expertise as the nation’s leading provider of hospital pharmacy-outsourced, sterile admixture services with Kit Check’s industry-leading medication tracking software to better manage inventory and reconcile controlled substances more efficiently.

In the hospital pharmacy, clinicians using the prefilled syringes with RFID-tags will be able to streamline the tracking of inventory, especially of controlled substances, and ensure accuracy when administering medications to patients. In the operating room, clinicians will be able to use the PharMEDium syringes with Kit Check’s Anesthesia Check® to automate controlled substance waste recording and reconciliation processes by integrating directly with anesthesia information management system (AIMS) to match dispensing, use, waste and billing records. These tools streamline workflow for clinicians including anesthesiologists and pharmacists allowing them to focus on the patient in front of them to help ensure they receive the right medication.

“Patient safety is at the forefront of everything we do. Since our inception, PharMEDium has led the industry in bringing best in class innovations to our services,” said Jenn Adams, President, PharMEDium. “By embedding Kit Check RFID tags on our syringes, we’re taking another step to help healthcare providers across the country advance patient safety and improve inventory management and controlled substances reconciliation.”

“Anesthesia providers are under constant time pressure in the OR which increases stress and raises the risk of error. Pharmacies are also challenged to maintain adequate inventory and accurately reconcile controlled substances usage,” said Kit Check CEO and Co-Founder Kevin MacDonald. “Combining PharMEDium prefilled syringes with Anesthesia Check’s automated tracking and recording of medication use saves time, helps reduce safety risk and allows providers to focus more on the patient.”

A limited pilot of select syringe codes has been underway and based on early success, will expand to include more hospital customers and additional syringe codes. General availability is expected by the end of the year.

PharMEDium and Kit Check will be showcasing their innovative solutions designed to help hospital and health system pharmacy leaders at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting 2016. To learn more, visit PharMEDium at Booth #1007 and Kit Check at Booth #716.
