Energy management

Energy management is critical to sustainability and an area that delivers value for our stakeholders. We actively seek new ways to improve efficiency and reduce costs by making significant investments in our distribution infrastructure and advanced warehouse management systems. We received a LEED Silver Certification at our Carrollton, TX office for our approach to green building standards, also featuring a community garden for associates to enjoy. We partnered with an energy optimization company to complete a LED lighting project at our Orlando, FL distribution center. In 2019, we completed construction of our on-site solar project at our Phoenix, AZ distribution center, and broke ground on our 2.27 MW PPA at our Sacramento, CA distribution center. As an organization we continue to work together to build upon our commitment to being environmentally responsible. For more information on our climate and energy practices, see our CDP disclosure

Transportation efficiency

Across AmerisourceBergen’s business units, we constantly look for opportunities to enhance the efficiency and reliability of transportation. Our third-party carriers utilize sophisticated delivery-route planning methods to consolidate orders and shipments, minimizing both the number of vehicles required to serve our customers and total miles traveled. In 2019, we entered into a partnership with UPS to deploy its Flight Forward drones to transport certain products; evaluated a new delivery tracking application to improve visibility into deliveries; and piloted a project with our courier in Georgia to optimize their delivery network. Our World Courier location in Frankfurt, Germany launched a Zero Emission Electric (ZEEV) program, adding their first IVECO daily electric vehicle.

Waste and water optimization

AmerisourceBergen and its associates are committed to recycling, as well as the reduction or total elimination of waste. In 2019, we recycled approximately 4,860 metric tons of pallets, 60 metric tons of totes, and 193 metric tons of electronics. To save paper while improving the delivery experience for our customers, we launched a new initiative in Richmond, VA to replace Driver Ready Packs (DRPs) – such as paper copies of invoices and marketing flyers – with electronic invoice packets (ePacks). In each of our distribution centers, AmerisourceBergen has implemented water efficiency practices and invested in automated and low-flow plumbing fixtures.

Responsible sourcing

AmerisourceBergen seeks opportunities to buy goods and services from suppliers, contractors and vendors who share our responsible sourcing goals. We incorporate sustainability into our procurement process for indirect goods, encouraging bidders to include socially, economically and environmentally friendly products and service options in their offerings.

Committed to supplier diversity

We are committed to promoting the success of small-, minority-, women-, disabled- and veteran-owned businesses as they are the foundation of a competitive economy and the source of many business innovations that make us a leader in healthcare distribution and related services. Accordingly, we support policies, procedures and programs designed to increase the inclusion of diverse suppliers across our sourcing process.
